“Aging in Place” is a term used to describe a growing trend for seniors wanting to age in the comfort of their home. Unfortunately, a sudden change in health can come on at any time. Aging in place creates a quality of life through removing barriers in the home to promote an active life where one doesn’t have to stop doing the activities they enjoy. This is important because seniors are living longer and more productive lives. According to AARP, 90% of people age 65+ would like to remain in their current home and community as they age. Only one in five seniors have made significant home modifications to help them age in place. Choosing to be proactive by making changes in our environment to help us as we age will make the difference in determining whether we can age in place. While there is no one size fits all approach to making our home meet our needs, the solution is finding a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) who can determine what is required to make the home accessible and barrier free. Jennifer Trevino is an Occupational Therapist and Certified Aging in Place Specialist who works with the homeowner, the caregiver, and the building professional to develop a customized plan to help the client stay engaged, active and in control of their life through practical solutions in their home regardless of their abilities.
